GUIDE: Treatment Preparation
-
Avoid cosmetic treatments around the treatment area.
Please allow at least four weeks between your cosmetic tattoo appointment and other treatments such as:
Botox
Dermal Filler
Chemical Peels
Laser
Microdermabrasion
Dermaplaning
Eyebrow growth serums
Other resurfacing treatments
If you are unsure if a treatment you have had recently may interfere with your cosmetic tattoo, please contact us prior to your appointment so we can confirm whether it is safe to proceed.
-
Pause active skincare.
Avoid using retinol, Vitamin A, AHA’s BHA’s or other strong exfoliating products. These products can increase skin sensitivity and may compromise both the treatment itself and interfere with the skin’s natural healing process.
-
BROWS:
Please avoid:
Brow waxing
Threading
Tinting
Brow lamination
We need to assess your natural brow growth and colour as well as ensuring your skin is calm and undisturbed.
LIPS:
Begin keeping your lips consistently hydrated.
Apply a gentle but nourishing lip balm throughout the day and avoid allowing your lips to become dry, cracked or flaky.
If your lips are particularly dry, gently exfoliate with a lip scrub several days before your appointment and follow with a nourishing balm.
DO NOT exfoliate your lips on the day of your appointment.
SUN EXPOSURE:
Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning including the use of fake tan.
-
Avoid Alcohol:
Please do not consume any alcohol 48 hours before your appointment, as it can increase bleeding and sensitivity.
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements:
Where medically appropriate, avoid non-prescribed substances that may increase bleeding such as:
Aspirin
Ibuprofen
Certain anti-inflammatory medications
Fish oil
Vitamin E
PLEASE NOTE: If a medication has been prescribed to you, do not stop taking it without first speaking with your doctor. If you regularly take medication that affects blood clotting, we cannot advise you to stop or change your dose. It is very important that you consult with your doctor and let them know you are planning to have cosmetic tattooing. They can advise whether it is safe for you to proceed and whether any medication adjustments are appropriate.
-
Do not consume any caffeinated beverages. Be mindful of any pain medication you take such as ibuprofen, as this can cause blood thinning.
Wash your hair and face:
We recommend washing your hair and face well on the morning of your appointment. Due to the nature of your aftercare healing recommendations it will be more difficult to do so following your treatment.
Come with your preferred brow/lip look:
You are welcome to arrive wearing your usual brow makeup if this helps us understand how you normally like your brows/lips to appear. Alternatively, reference images are very helpful for understanding your preferences.
-
Please at a substantial meal prior to your appointment.
Most treatments span 2.5 - 3hrs so arriving well-fed and hydrated will help you feel comfortable throughout the process.
Feel free to bring water with you and a quick snack if required.
REMINDER: Please do not consume coffee or other caffeinated beverages on the day of your appointment.
-
Please avoid intense exercise immediately prior to your appointment. Exercise increases circulation and may contribute to increased bleeding or sensitivity during the treatment.
Please also consider any exercise commitments for the week following your treatment. Heavy, sweat inducing exercise is not recommended as part of your aftercare/healing guide.
-
Under the Medicines and Poisons Act 2019 and QLD Health legislation it is explicitly illegal for cosmetic tattoo artists to sell, stock or supply topical anaesthetics as they are regulated scheduled medicines and must only be supplied and administered by authorised health professionals.
Queensland law dictates that you must be 100% responsible for purchasing your own numbing cream.
Contact a Compounding Pharmacy: You cannot buy these off a normal chemist shelf. You must contact a specialised compounding pharmacy.
Consultation and Scripting: Most reputable compounding pharmacies operate an online portal or phone consultation service specifically for cosmetic tattoo clients. A pharmacist or an associated telehealth doctor will review your medical history and write a custom prescription for your specific procedure.
Cosmetic tattoo artists are not allowed to apply (which is a form of administration) scheduled medicines. You are solely responsible for the application of your prescribed numbing cream at all times.
-
Lip blush can trigger a cold sore outbreak in people with a history of herpes simplex virus.
We recommend speaking with your GP or pharmacist about preventative antiviral medication and whether it is appropriate for you.
If you experience tingling, blistering or an active cold sore your appointment will need to be rescheduled until the area has completely healed.
-
Your appointment may need to be rescheduled if you have:
An active cold sore or cold sore symptoms
Cracked, peeling or severely dry lips
Sunburn or peeling skin
A rash, dermatitis or irritation around the treatment area
Broken or compromised skin
An infection
Significant illness
Recently undergone a treatment that has left the skin sensitive or compromised.
Healthy, intact skin is essential for cosmetic tattooing.
If you are unsure whether something may affect your appointment, please contact us before attending.
-
FOR YOUR BROWS:
Bring in reference images if you have a particular style in mind.
You may also arrive wearing your brows as you normally would so we can assess your preferred shape, definition and colour.
FOR YOUR LIPS:
If you have a favourite lipstick, lip liner or lip colour, please bring a photo or the product itself.
Please remember your healed lip blush will always be influenced by your natural lip tone and skin.

CONTRAINDICATIONS & MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Your safety and the quality of your healed result are our priority. Cosmetic tattooing involves controlled trauma to the skin, so certain medical conditions, medications and treatments may affect your suitability, healing or pigment retention.
Please disclose all relevant medical conditions, medications and treatments during your consultation. If you are unsure whether something may affect your appointment, please speak with your doctor or pharmacist before proceeding.
PREGNANCY & BREASTFEEDING
Cosmetic tattooing is not performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
DIABETES
Diabetes may affect wound healing and increase the risk of complications. Cosmetic tattooing may require medical clearance depending on your individual circumstances and how well your diabetes is controlled.
Please discuss your suitability with your treating doctor before booking if you have diabetes.
BLOOD DISORDERS & BLEEDING CONDITIONS
Conditions that affect blood clotting, including haemophilia and other bleeding disorders, may increase bleeding and affect healing.
Please disclose any diagnosed bleeding or clotting disorder and any medication that affects blood clotting before your appointment. Medical clearance may be required.
HEART CONDITIONS
Certain cardiovascular conditions and medications may affect your suitability for cosmetic tattooing.
Please disclose any significant heart condition or cardiovascular medication and seek medical advice where required before proceeding.
CHEMOTHERAPY & IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE TREATMENT
If you are currently undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy or significant immunosuppressive treatment, cosmetic tattooing should be postponed.
After completing treatment, your skin and immune system may require additional time to recover. Medical clearance may be required before treatment can proceed.
The appropriate timeframe will depend on your individual treatment and recovery, so please discuss this with your treating specialist.
TRICHOTILLOMANIA
Trichotillomania may result in repeated trauma, scarring or changes to the skin within the brow area. Scar tissue can affect pigment implantation and healing.
Your artist will assess the condition of the skin and determine whether cosmetic tattooing is appropriate.
GLAUCOMA & EYE MEDICATION
Certain glaucoma medications, particularly topical eye drops, may cause increased sensitivity or irritation around the eyes.
This is particularly relevant to eyeliner tattooing. If you use glaucoma medication or have an eye condition, please disclose this before booking so your suitability can be assessed.
ACCUTANE / ISOTRETINOIN & RETINOIDS
Isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane) can significantly alter the skin and affect healing.
If you are currently taking isotretinoin, or have recently completed treatment, please disclose this prior to your appointment. The appropriate waiting period can vary depending on your treatment and medical circumstances, so you may be required to obtain medical clearance before proceeding.
Prescription retinoids such as tretinoin/Retin-A and strong topical retinoids can also increase skin sensitivity. These should not be used directly on or immediately around the treatment area before cosmetic tattooing.
Please disclose all retinoid use before your appointment.
RETINOL & VITAMIN A
Retinol, retinal and other Vitamin A-derived skincare products may increase skin sensitivity and irritation.
Please discontinue use around the treatment area prior to your appointment in accordance with the above instructions.
EYELASH & EYEBROW GROWTH SERUMS
Some growth serums, particularly those containing prostaglandin analogues, can cause increased sensitivity, irritation or changes to the skin and surrounding hair follicles.
If you use an eyelash or eyebrow growth serum, please disclose the product prior to your appointment. You may be required to discontinue use before treatment.
ACTIVE SKIN CONDITIONS
Cosmetic tattooing cannot be performed over skin that is:
● Sunburnt
● Broken or damaged
● Inflamed or irritated
● Infected
● Experiencing an active rash, dermatitis or eczema flare
● Showing signs of an active cold sore
Treatment will need to be postponed until the area has fully recovered.
COLD SORES / HERPES SIMPLEX
If you have ever experienced cold sores, please disclose this before lip blush.
Lip blush can trigger a herpes simplex outbreak, even if you have not experienced one recently.
If you have an active cold sore, tingling, blistering or other symptoms at the time of your appointment, treatment must be postponed until the area has completely healed.
If you have a history of cold sores, please speak with your doctor or pharmacist before your appointment about whether preventative antiviral treatment is appropriate for you and, if so, how and when it should be taken.
BARE. ATELIER does not prescribe or recommend a specific antiviral medication or dosage.
MEDICATIONS & ALLERGIES
Please disclose any medications, supplements or known allergies that may be relevant to your treatment, particularly:
● Medication that affects blood clotting
● Immunosuppressive medication
● Medication that may affect wound healing
● Known allergies to topical anaesthetics or their ingredients
● Previous reactions to tattoo pigments, cosmetics or topical products
Do not stop or alter prescribed medication for the purpose of cosmetic tattooing without first consulting your doctor.
⸻
WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK
Contraindications can vary depending on your individual health, medications and treatment history.
If you are unsure whether you are suitable for cosmetic tattooing, please contact BARE. ATELIER before your appointment. We may request medical clearance from your treating doctor before proceeding.
Your safety always comes before your appointment.
-
Every client’s skin is different. Certain skin conditions, skincare products, previous treatments and existing cosmetic tattooing can influence how pigment is implanted, healed and retained.
These factors do not always mean you cannot be treated, but they may affect your treatment options or expected result.
SKIN CONDITIONS
Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, dermatitis, acne and rosacea can affect the condition and sensitivity of the skin.
If your skin is currently experiencing an active flare, inflammation, irritation, excessive dryness or compromised barrier, your appointment may need to be postponed until the skin has settled.
Certain skin conditions may also affect pigment retention and healing. Your artist will assess the treatment area during your consultation.
RETINOIDS & ACTIVE SKINCARE
Products and medications containing retinoids, retinol, retinal, Vitamin A, AHAs, BHAs or other exfoliating/active ingredients can increase skin sensitivity and may affect the skin’s ability to heal.
Please disclose any prescription or over-the-counter active skincare you use.
If you have used isotretinoin (Accutane) or other prescription acne medication, please advise us before your appointment. Your individual circumstances may require a longer waiting period or medical clearance before cosmetic tattooing.
OILY SKIN
Very oily skin can influence how eyebrow pigment heals.
Fine hairstroke techniques may be less predictable on oily skin, as individual strokes can soften or blur over time and may heal with a more powder-like appearance.
For some clients with oily skin, an Ombré Brow or combination technique may provide a more suitable and predictable result.
Your artist will recommend the technique best suited to your skin and desired outcome.
MATURE SKIN & DEEP WRINKLES
Mature skin and skin with significant wrinkles, laxity or textural changes can make brow mapping and pigment implantation more challenging.
Existing skin texture can influence how the final result appears once healed, and results may be less predictable.
While we will always work with your individual anatomy and skin, perfect symmetry or uniformity cannot be guaranteed, particularly where natural skin texture or movement affects the treatment area.
MOLES, BUMPS & RAISED SKIN
Cosmetic tattooing cannot be performed directly over moles, raised lesions, bumps or other areas of raised or abnormal skin.
Your artist will work around these areas where possible.
If you have a mole or skin lesion within the proposed treatment area that has not been assessed, you may be asked to obtain medical advice before proceeding.
KELOID SCARRING
If you have a personal history of keloid or problematic scar formation, please disclose this prior to your appointment.
Cosmetic tattooing creates controlled trauma to the skin and may not be suitable for clients who are prone to keloid scarring.
Medical clearance may be required before treatment.
SUN EXPOSURE & SUNBURN
Please do not attend your appointment with sunburn, peeling or significantly sun-exposed skin.
Sun-damaged or compromised skin may be more sensitive and can affect healing and pigment retention.
Avoid intentional tanning and excessive sun exposure in the lead-up to your appointment and protect the treatment area from the sun as directed during the healing process.
FACIAL & SKIN TREATMENTS
Please avoid facials and cosmetic skin treatments that may irritate, exfoliate or compromise the treatment area for at least 4 weeks before and after your cosmetic tattoo appointment.
This includes treatments such as:
● Chemical peels
● Laser treatments
● Microdermabrasion
● Dermaplaning
● Strong exfoliation
● Resurfacing treatments
● Other treatments that compromise or significantly stimulate the skin
If you are unsure whether a particular treatment is compatible with your cosmetic tattoo appointment, please contact us before proceeding.
EXISTING COSMETIC TATTOO
If you have previously had cosmetic tattooing, permanent makeup or microblading performed in the area you wish to have treated, please send us (if you haven’t already) a clear, close-up photograph of the existing pigment before your appointment.
We need to assess the colour, saturation, shape and condition of the existing tattoo to determine whether we can work over it.
In some cases, existing pigment may need to fade sufficiently or undergo removal before a new cosmetic tattoo can be performed.
YOUR EXPECTATIONS
Cosmetic tattooing enhances your natural features; it does not create perfectly symmetrical or completely static results.
Healing and pigment retention vary from person to person and are influenced by skin type, lifestyle, skincare, age, health and aftercare.
Your artist will always work towards the most desirable and appropriate result for your individual features, but specific healed results, exact colour retention and perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed.
If we believe a particular technique is unlikely to provide a satisfactory or predictable result for your skin, we will discuss alternative options with you before proceeding.
